Cagle Drops Bid to Become Next Governor

Georgia Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle has dropped out of the race for governor, a surprise move that immediately scrambled the crowded race to replace Sonny Perdue in 2010. At a news conference Wednesday, Cagle cited nerve damage to hisneck and spinal cord that will require surgery. Surrounded by his wife and three sons, he choked up several times as he made the announcement. The 43-year-old from Gainesville was considered a strong contender to win the Republican nomination for governor next summer. Cagle's departure leaves three Republican still in the race: Secretary of State Karen Handel, Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine and State Representative Austin Scott of Tifton. Cagle was elected lieutenant governor in 2006 after 12 years in the state Senate. He says he will run again for lieutenant governor.
In a press release, Cagle cited continuing back and neck pain which worsened over the 2009 as the reason for his withdrawal from the race.

Georgia Gazette Riddle for April 13-17, 2009

The riddle is about a state park and you’ll have a chance to win a state parks annual pass by guessing right. This week, however, in addition to getting outdoors, we are getting out on the water by highlighting the state park’s paddle club. Here’s how it works. You go to one of six participating state parks and get a paddle club membership card. And all of these parks have scenic waterways to explore from North to South. And once you canoe or kayak all 22-miles of these waterways, you get a T-shirt and some bragging rights. So, today’s riddle answer is one of those six paddle club state parks. You don't need to be a member of the paddle club to answer the riddle. Here’s your clue.

A heron dines on a fishy cuisine.
You paddle a trail sinewy and saline.

Through the reeds, you escape insanity.
On the trail, a dolphin, a manatee.

But just you watch, so your boat can glide.
Careful to stay on the right side of tide.

Okay, I’m practically giving that one away. If you think you know the answer to this week’s riddle, one of six parks in the parks’ paddle club, send us your answer, with your full name and address, to gazette@gpb.org for a chance to win a free state parks annual pass. You have until Friday to guess.

If far west is too far to go
How 'bout southwest where
One of Georgia's own 7 wonders
You will know

If it's painting you want to do
Just bring a canvas
Natural pigments can be found
In almost every hue

That from the carelessness of farmers
Such a natural Georgia beauty

Don't just come for April showers
You'll love it here in July, August and June....
